Haakgat, Cape Town - Sunday 22.12.13

Haakgat is a waveriding spot, about 7km north of Blouberg. There is a rock shelf and a kelp forest that clings to the rocks that forms a good left hand break. The wave is favored by windsurfers and kiters alike. When the wind exceeds 25 knots the windsurfers are in the majority. The prevailing south easterly wind is slightly off shore at this spot which is good for cleaning the wave face but adds a bit of risk should you drop a kite. The windsurfers sometimes struggle out through the white water as once brought down in the breaking zone, to take off and get momentum between walls of white water takes skill. Those kiters with more skill can hoist themselves over the breaks.

On this day the swells were 3.2m deep sea with a 14 second wave period. This resulted in sets of between 5 and 6 foot, with 10 to 12 foot wave faces.

Whitewater can get intimidating

The wave can run for up to 100m or more to the left.

First photo of a windsurfer on this site, but I figured they actually deserve a feature, as the skill involved is substantial and they have what it takes - STOKE.

Kite Beach Cape Town - 21.12.13

Kitebeach, Cape Town. 21.12.13. A presentable swell running - 2.8m deep sea swell at 15 second intervals - resulting in 3 - 4 ft waves with faces double that height. Naish were having a demo day of their 2014 kites  and one of their riders, ex world champ, Kevin Langeree was doing his stuff.

Big Bay - 17.12.13

Big Bay. Wind was over 25 knots, closer to 30. Massive jumps were possible and happening. Some pics from a more elevated view point.

Megaloop underway. Note windsurfer below also going into a move.

10 to 12m up.

Edging strongly. Note the chop on the water.

Kamers - 16.12.13

Kamers is a really good wave riding spot just north of Big Bay. The waves were about 2 foot, which is fairly small for this spot, but the riders were out there and shredding. The wind was about 20knots south- east. These are my favourite pics.

Some 2013 Cape Town Winter Sessions

Seeing it's a quiet day and the wind is'nt playing along, I have looked through some of the pics I took during the 2013 winter. In winter the wind comes generally from the north west and along with it come cold fronts and rain. The wind is more gusty and not as dense as the summer south easter however there is still fun to be had for those few brave and avid enough to venture out. You will see from the background that the seas are rougher and the light generally dimmed a bit by clouds trawling the skies.

First 25 Knot Plus Day in Cape Town

On the 13th October the wind blew between 25 and 30 knots average. There were not too many kites out being early season but those who were were smashing the swells, which were about a consistent 3 feet.
These photos were taken at Big Bay.
